Thousand Oaks, CA
Dad arrived at his forever home, welcomed by his Lord Jesus Christ, our Mom, his parents, brother, and sisters on February 8, 2021, surrounded by his loving family. He is forever in the arms of Jesus, the Lord he loved and so faithfully served.
Gene was born March 21, 1927 in his parents’ home in Faulk County, South Dakota. In 1945 Gene was drafted into the Army and stationed in Berlin, Germany where he was assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division. Not long after returning to the states, Gene met the love of his life, Carole Cully. After a few short weeks of knowing each other and falling in love they became engaged and were married August 16, 1947 (which would become 70 years of love together). Soon after marrying, they moved to California where Gene graduated from Loyola College with an accounting degree. In California the Nestor Camelot expanded by 6 children: Troy (Judy), Craig (Cathy), Cheryl (Chris), Kevin (Kathy), Ginger (Eric), Teri (Greg); 17 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren with one on the way. Gene retired from Hughes Aircraft after 35 years as an accountant.
Dad devoted his time to helping others in his community and his church family at St. Paschal Baylon Church. For 33 years Dad coordinated the semi-annual blood drive for his church attracting from 150 to 250 blood donors each event. Dad was honored to receive multiple awards including the St. Paschal Men’s Club awards (which included the first honoree to receive “Member of the Year”), 2011 Ventura County Senior of the year nominee, City of Thousand Oaks Council on Aging award, Catholic Charities of Los Angeles, Special Congressional Recognition and Pro Ecclesia Et Pontifice.
Today and everyday we will remember Dad’s steadfast endurance, consistent integrity, contagious faith, personal discipline and inspirational courage. We love and miss you Dad and we’re grateful for your love, discipline and wisdom and we will leap for joy when we join you again in paradise.
Released from the bonds of earth to touch the face of God.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, February 20 at St. Paschal Baylon Catholic Church, 155 E. Janss Rd., Thousand Oaks. Interment will follow be at Valley Oaks Memorial Park, Westlake Village.
We would like to give thanks to Buena Vista Hospice and Comfort Keepers Home Care, both of Thousand Oaks. Their guidance, kindness and gentle care will never be forgotten.
