Howard Fred Wullschleger

March 23, 1929 ~ February 1, 2022 (age 92)

Howard Fred Wullschleger passed away Tuesday, February 1, 2022 of congestive heart failure. He was surrounded by his family.

He was born in Bismark, ND on March 23, 1929 and lived in Hebron, ND until 1944 when he moved to Oakland, CA with his mother and sister.

He graduated from Castlemont High School and attended the University of California, Berkeley prior to entering the U.S. Navy and serving as a hospital corpsman for four years during the Korean War with the rank of HM3.

While in the Navy, he married Marilyn Macy, a Navy nurse. After they both completed their military service, they moved to Long Beach. There, Howard studied accounting at night school at Long Beach City College and UCLA while working as a junior accountant for Foster and Kleiser Outdoor Advertising. He was later promoted to regional accounting manager for the same company in Oakland, Long Beach, and Portland, OR.

Howard also worked as an accountant for 7-UP, Pepsi, and Metromedia Corp. In 1984 he joined Pioneer Gift Wrap as the manager of general accounting and was later promoted to vice president and controller. In 1992, Pioneer Gift Wrap merged with Bonita Packaging in Portland, OR where he was employed as vice president and controller until he retired in 1994, returning to Long Beach.

In 1996 he moved to Camarillo where he met his present wife, Joanna Stoll. They were married for 24 years.

Howard was a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks for 52 years. He went through all the chairs at Long Beach Lodge #888 and became the Exalted Ruler 1976-1977. He served the California-Hawaii Elks Association as a district vice president 1989-1990 and District Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler 1991-1992. He transferred to Ventura Lodge #1430 when he moved to Camarillo.

He was a past president and treasurer of the Retired Business and Professional Men of Ventura and a member of Masonic Lodge #214, Ventura.

Howard is survived by his wife Joanna; son James Wullschleger; daughters Debbie Pitman and Cheryl Thomas;  8 grandchildren; and 9 great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents Katherine and Albert Wullschleger; sister Mary Lucille Wullschleger; and youngest daughter Diane Hill.

Joanna would like to thank the Mission Hospice team. They provided professional, compassionate care for Howard. His nurse manager Maureen organized all the ancillary staff who made his final days comfortable. Josie and Carmen, thank you for taking such good care of Howard. Bless you all.

A celebration of Howard’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday February 26 at Mount Cross Lutheran Church, 102 Camino Esplendido, Camarillo.
