Lorraine Mary Sutherland of Thousand Oaks passed away unexpectedly and peacefully in her sleep at home on March 27, 2021. She was 80 years old.
Born in Allston, Massachusetts on January 17, 1941, Lorraine was an award-winning speed skater during her early years, winning first place in the Ice Capades Silver Skates Derby in 1959. In 1950, she met Don Sutherland, the love of her life. Lorraine married Don in 1962 and they moved to California to raise a family. In 1973, they settled in Thousand Oaks, where their home of over 50 years became a magnet for family and friends to gather for celebrations. Tradition and family was a foundational part of everything Lorraine did throughout her life. Holidays were of particular importance, including Thanksgiving, Christmas and birthdays, which were always celebrated with family and friends in grand style.
Lorraine loved to travel the world. She was known for her sharp mind and talent in financial management. Over the years, she co-founded two businesses in Thousand Oaks: Valley Office Machines and Sutherland Office Products Company. In addition, and through her career, she worked in the recording, non-profit and legal industries. Lorraine’s sense of humor, discipline and work ethic were her trademarks and were famously known and loved by family, friends and colleagues.
Lorraine is survived by her husband Donald Sutherland; her sons Kevin Sutherland of Mill Valley, CA, Scott Sutherland of Leesburg, VA; and her grandchildren Shannon, Kyle, Matthew and Thomas Sutherland. She is predeceased by her daughter Jennifer Ann Sutherland.
Lorraine would certainly have wanted to thank those who knew and loved her over the years. She is now in God’s loving arms and may her bright light continue to shine in Heaven. A celebration of Lorraine’s life will be announced in the near future.
