We are deeply sorry for your loss - the staff at Griffin Family Funeral Chapels: Thousand Oaks
Thousand Oaks, CA
Sister Mary Bernadette Pendola (Gloria Jean Pendola), 76, of Thousand Oaks died Wednesday, December 15, 2021 in Newbury Park. She was born to Charles and Mary (Dilena) Pendola in Richmond on June 22, 1945 and was a 36-year Ventura County resident, moving here from Los Angeles.
Gloria attended St. Cornelius Elementary School and St. Joseph High School. However, at the beginning of her junior year, she enrolled at Notre Dame Academy in Los Angeles. She entered the Sisters of Notre Dame in February 1963 and professed her first vows in 1965.
Although Sister Mary Bernadette spent the next 24 years ministering in elementary and secondary education, her first love was caring for the sick. Subsequently, she became a licensed vocational nurse. Her long-time dream to serve at an SND mission came true in 2000 when she was assigned to the dispensary in Jamalpur, India. Later, she ministered as the school nurse at St. Julie School in Buseesa, Uganda.
In 2007, Sister joined the community at Notre Dame Center because of a diagnosis of Parkinson's Disease. A thrill of her life was traveling to Lourdes in 2013 under the auspices of the Knights of Malta.
Sister was extremely grateful for her family, relatives and friends who surrounded her with love and support throughout her life. She especially appreciated the many sisters who taught her and encouraged her during her elementary school years. Sister Mary Bernadette was always very grateful for all the Sister Servants of Mary who minister to the sick and for all the health care personnel at Mary Health of the Sick in Newbury Park who lovingly cared for her during her long illness with Parkinson's Disease.
Sister Mary Bernadette is survived by her niece, Renee Pinzi Pelliccione of New York.
In recognition of Sister Mary Bernadette's passion for the SND mission fields, contributions to the SND Global Missions Fund will be appreciated. https://sndusa.org/donateca/
